When is the best time to visit Kenya for a safari?
There is no single best month for every traveller. The right time depends on what you want from the journey, where you want to go and how much flexibility you have.
June to October: a popular safari window
The middle and later part of the year is widely chosen for Kenya safari travel. Conditions are often favourable for time outdoors, and wildlife viewing can be excellent. This period can also coincide with higher demand, so planning ahead is useful if particular camps, dates or routes matter to you.
November to December: greener landscapes and changing conditions
Short rains can change the character of the landscape and travel conditions. For travellers who value greener scenery and a different rhythm, this can be an appealing period. Rain does not automatically make a journey impractical, but routes and activities should be planned with current conditions in mind.
January to February: another useful safari period
The beginning of the year can offer good opportunities for wildlife-focused travel, depending on the destination and current local conditions. It can work particularly well when paired with time elsewhere in Kenya rather than treating the safari as the only part of the trip.
March to May: the long-rains period
The long rains can bring wetter conditions and more challenging roads in some areas. That does not make travel impossible, but it does make route planning, accommodation choice and flexibility more important. Travellers who are comfortable with changing conditions may find a quieter experience during this period.
What about the Kenyan coast?
If your journey includes Diani or another coastal destination, consider the coast separately from the safari portion. A well-designed itinerary can balance safari conditions with the type of beach experience you want rather than choosing the entire trip around one season.
